HSBC/British Council, Chinese Language and Culture Immersion Course , Summer 2011

Tags: UK

Who is the course supported by?    Funded by the HSBC Global Education Programme and managed by the British Council,

What does the course offer? It offers primary school the opportunity  to take part in a week-long residential Chinese Language and Culture Immersion Course. Students will have Mandarin Chinese lessons in the mornings, and in the afternoons take part in exciting workshops to learn about the rich culture of China, such as lion dancing and opera mask painting.  The courses culminate in a memorable final performance where the students showcase what they have learnt to their families.

Aims of the course? The aims of the courses are to increase students' understanding of and enthusiasm for Chinese language and culture, build the skills of the accompanying teachers and increase the teaching of Chinese language and culture in the schools from which the students come, with those schools supporting others in the local area to do the same.

Where and for who? Courses will be held in Surrey 24 - 30 July 2011 and Rutland 7 - 13 August 2011.  Schools must apply in a cluster of two or three primary schools, supported by their local authority, with ten student places available for each successful cluster. There may only be one application per local authority, and each cluster must send an accompanying teacher.  As part of the application clusters will be asked how they will increase the teaching of Chinese language and culture in their own schools, and support local schools in doing the same. The course is for Year 5 students.

Priority will be given to schools new to or interested in working with China that do not currently offer regular Mandarin lessons to their students or have Mandarin teaching embedded into their curriculum.
